The University of South Carolina community is mourning the loss of Erik “Big E” Elken, a junior and cherished member of the men’s rugby club, who passed away Tuesday after a courageous fight with a rare Stage 4 sarcoma. Erik’s impact reached far beyond the rugby field; he was admired across campus for his deep faith, gentle leadership, and genuine kindness. A candlelight vigil will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on the Horseshoe for all who wish to honor his memory.
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Erik graduated from Conestoga High School before enrolling at USC, where he studied accounting and quickly became an integral part of the rugby team. Standing 6’5” and 243 pounds, he was a powerful lock and a two-year starter for the Gamecocks. Yet teammates, coaches, and friends remember him most for his warmth, humility, and sportsmanship.
A committed man of faith, Erik led the team’s Bible study, opened every match with prayer, and was known for offering support to anyone facing adversity. Head Coach John Roberts described him as “the best among us… a light on our team,” sharing condolences for Erik’s mother, Leslie, and the entire Elken family.
Erik withdrew from school and rugby in January after discovering a cancerous mass in his hip and was soon diagnosed with an aggressive, rare sarcoma. He met every stage of treatment with resilience and positivity. In April, the rugby club held a head-shaving fundraiser that raised more than $10,000 for his care, reflecting the deep love his community held for him. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 28 at 2 p.m. at Great Valley Presbyterian Church in Malvern, Pennsylvania.
